Johannesburg -
Police denied on Thursday that former acting police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has been appointed police commissioner of the Northern Cape.
“When there is an appointment of such a nature, we would ensure that we inform the media and public accordingly,” said Brigadier Lindela Mashigo.
He knew nothing of the appointment, he said, adding: “There is absolutely no truth in these allegations.”
The Democratic Alliance earlier said it had learnt that Mkhwanazi had been appointed as Northern Cape police commissioner.
MP Dianne Kohler-Barnard said Mkhwanazi should instead be investigated for allegations that he covered up a murder.
Mkhwanazi reportedly admitted to fellow officers that he had witnessed a murder, but failed to report it.
Mashigo said police management in the Northern Cape would remain unchanged until further notice.
“General Janet Basson is still the appointed commissioner in the province,” he said. - Sapa
