Johannesburg - Community members from Meadowlands in Soweto on Thursday assaulted a man suspected to have broken into and stolen property from a local hardware shop, Gauteng police said.

Police received a call from a local about a mob attacking a man in the area, said Constable Sibusiso Chauke.

“(Police) rushed to the scene and found the suspect lying on the street,” said Chauke.

He had been severely beaten.

It was alleged that the man, 22, had been found with a computer screen, bolt cutter, chisel, electrical cable, and four pliers, all suspected to have been stolen from the local hardware store.

The shop had been broken into between 6.30pm on Wednesday and 6am on Thursday.

“The owner of the hardware (shop) was called by the community members and he identified the goods as his,” said Chauke.

The suspect was taken to hospital by ambulance under police guard.

He would appear in court as soon as he was discharged.

He faced charges of business burglary and possession of suspected stolen goods. - Sapa
