Cape Town – A gunman, who hid away at a local spaza shop after allegedly shooting and killing a 16-year-old boy, was caught by an angry mob.

The drama unfolded on Thursday just after 5pm in Buitesingel Street, Scottsdene, Kraaifontein.

Witnesses say the teen, Ricardo “Cardo” Assia was walking in the street when he was approached by two gunmen who opened fire on him.

It is believed Cardo tried to escape the gunfire by running away, but collapsed in the street to his death, in front of children who were playing.

According to witnesses, the gunmen hid inside a spaza shop in the street after the shooting, but were quickly surrounded by community members.

One of the suspects managed to escape while the other was caught by the community.

Ricardo’s aunt, who asked not to be identified, admits he was a naughty child: “The child who was shot, was naughty and we cannot hide that away."

“If you choose the wrong friends like Ricardo did, it can lead to your death."

“I am glad that one of the suspects were caught after the two hid away inside a spaza shop."

“This shows these gangsters that we do not take nonsense here.”

Police spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana confirms a case of murder has been opened for investigation, but could not confirm whether the suspect had been arrested.
