Johannesburg – Reacting to the murder of four people at a Mpumalanga farm, the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) on Wednesday called for the restoration of farmer-commandos or rural security forces, saying thses killings were "unacceptable".
"We believe that current security measures are insufficient," ACDP leader and MP Kenneth Meshoe in a statement.
Earlier on Wednesday morning the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) arrested four foreign nationals in connection with the murder of a man, his wife and both his parents at a farm in Modderbult.
The foreigners – two Nigerians and two Mozambicans were arrested after they were found with property belonging to the deceased.
"We share in the shock and concern of the farming community after learning of the murders of four family members on Modderbult farm outside Balfour in Mpumalanga," said Meshoe.
Meshoe said the murders had brought the number of farm murders to 11 in February alone. He said this was unacceptable.
"As farm attacks seem to be increasing, police urgently need to increase their vigilance as farmers feed our nation," said the ACDP leader.
"Targeting food producers is tantamount to targeting the livelihood of our nation."
