Durban - A Pietermaritzburg woman will appear in court on Wednesday for the murder of her 16-month-old baby.

The 29-year-old woman was arrested by the Plessislaer detectives in Imbali on Tuesday.

It is alleged that on Sunday, the woman strangled her son, placed his body in a packet, and dumped it near a river. A passer-by noticed the packet next to the river and discovered the body.

Police were alerted to the gruesome discovery and intensive investigations led them to the woman.

Police spokeswoman Lieutenant Joey Jeevan said the motive for the murder was not known.

Neighbours of the woman said that were shocked by the murder.

Some described her as reserved and timid, while others speculated she could not afford to take care of her child.

Investigations continue.
