Johannesburg - A woman and her daughter were killed during an attack at their home in Etwatwa, Daveyton, East Rand police said on Sunday.
Three men confronted a tenant, 19, at the house at gunpoint and forced her to open the gate around 8pm on Saturday, Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini said in a statement.
They entered the house with her and found the house owner, Dina
Masuku, 62, and her daughter Phumzile, 26, inside. The men allegedly repeatedly raped Phumzile and the tenant.
“At this stage it cannot be confirmed whether the elderly woman was also raped,” Dlamini said.
The men tied up Dina and Phumzile and covered their heads with plastic bags which they taped around their necks.
The tenant was threatened, tied up, blindfolded and locked up in a back room.
“In the early hours of the morning she untied herself and escaped through the window and alerted the neighbours.”
Police arrived and found that the mother and daughter had suffocated.
The attackers fled the scene with two cellphones and a Volvo belonging to Phumzile's boyfriend. The car was found in KwaThema.
One man, aged 31, was arrested. The other two were still at large. Cases of murder, rape and house robbery were opened. - Sapa
