A 21-year-old woman was arrested in Butterworth on Friday for allegedly strangling her two-month-old son, Eastern Cape police said.

“The suspect told her family that she strangled her son on November 21, and decided to hide him in a forest,” Captain Jackson Manatha said.

“The baby was found in a very bad condition. The motive for the gruesome murder has not been established, but the family decided to inform police about this crime, hence the woman was arrested and charged for murder.”

The woman's mother had asked her where the baby was and she said she took him to his father's homestead.

The family learnt this was not true after they contacted the baby's father. She then led the family to the forest where the body was found.

The woman was expected to appear in the Butterworth Magistrate's Court on Monday on a charge of murder. - Sapa
