Barkly East, Eastern Cape -

Three more of the prisoners who escaped from Barkly East prison were re-arrested on Monday, Eastern Cape police said.

“Eleven prisoners escaped on Saturday and four of them were re-arrested on Sunday. We re-arrested three more on Monday afternoon,” spokesman Major Ernest Sigobe said.

The prisoners took warders hostage and stole a firearm from a safe. On their way out, they shot dead a warder, Mzukisi Michael Dusubana, 54, in the courtyard. Four of his colleagues were wounded.

The hunt for the four remaining prisoners was continuing.

“We appeal to anyone who might have information on their whereabouts to not approach them as they are armed and dangerous, but to contact their nearest police station.” - Sapa
