Johannesburg - Four people were shot dead, a driver escaping from gunmen knocked a woman down, killing her, and a motorist fleeing from the scene of an accident dragged a woman under a vehicle for 100m, injuring her badly - all in Joburg on Thursday morning.

In the first incident, violence erupted at the Windmill Park taxi rank at about 7am when four people were shot.

The spokesman for Ekurhuleni Emergency Management Services (EMS), Willie Ntladi, said four men were shot multiple times in what is believed to have been taxi violence.

They died at the scene.

Ntladi said during the shooting a taxi driver tried to escape from the scene.

“As he was fleeing from the people who were shooting randomly, he lost control of the vehicle.

“His taxi veered off the road on to the pavement and bumped a woman waiting for a taxi.

“This taxi driver did not stop after hitting the woman,” Ntladi said.

The woman was badly injured.

She died on the way to the hospital.

In the second incident on Thursday morning, two motorists were involved in a minor bumper bashing at the corners of William Nicol and Sandton Drive.

According to ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring, a woman whose vehicle was hit from behind got out of the car to exchange details with the motorist who had bumped into her.

However, that motorist was apparently fleeing the scene.

In doing so, the motorist hit the woman who was then trapped under the motorist’s vehicle and dragged for about 100m.

Meiring said when paramedics arrived at the scene, they found the woman lying in the middle of the road.

“She had sustained head injuries and could not speak. The driver was not found at the scene,” he said, adding that paramedics treated the patient for injuries, providing her with advanced life support to stabilise her.

“Once treated, she was transported by ambulance to a private hospital in Joburg for urgent treatment.”

Meanwhile, two men were killed and six arrested during a shoot-out with the police in Thokoza, Ekurhuleni, on Wednesday night.

The police were following up on information about a planned robbery at a shop and a butchery in the area.

They followed the men suspected of plotting a robbery, who, once they realised they were being tailed, started shooting at the police on Khumalo Road.

The police returned fire, shooting dead two of the suspects.

One of the cars driven by the suspects, a Ford Fiesta, was reported hijacked in Jeppe.

Two other vehicles, a Honda Ballade and a Toyota Quantum, were recovered. The police also recovered three pistols.
