Moruleng protest turns violent

A service delivery protest in Moruleng turned violent on Tuesday when angry residents torched a shop and vehicle, North West police said.

About a thousand protesters took to the streets at 7pm, said Brigadier Thulani Ngubane.

“Protesters were barricading roads while the pelting police with stones.”

He said the residents were angry because the local municipality had failed show up last month to receive a memorandum.

“Protesters are now demanding that the memorandum be handed over otherwise they will continue to protest,” Ngubane said.

He said no arrests had been made and the situation was volatile.

“We expect to make many arrests soon. Police have been deployed and will stay in the affected areas to monitor the situation.” - Sapa
