Cape Town – A mother who survived a suicide attempt which claimed the life of her three-week-old son after she set their shack alight appeared in court on Wednesday.

Mtefeleng Lethetsa, 35, appeared in the Strand District Court, before magistrate Karen Scheepers, who remanded her to Thursday.

On Thursday, police will book her out of her holding cells, for her to take them to an alternative address where she will be staying, if released on bail.

After pointing out this address to the police, she is expected to appear in court again, on Thursday.

The baby was declared dead by paramedics, but his three-year-old brother was saved.

Their 31-year-old father was reportedly admitted to Tygerberg Hospital with burn wounds and for smoke inhalation.
