Johannesburg - The sentencing procedures of serial escapee Bongani Moyo will be heard by the Pretoria High Court on Wednesday.

Testifying on Tuesday, Moyo told the court he realised all the bad things he had done and would not escape from custody again.

The State argued that Moyo had pleaded guilty to the string of charges against him only because he was backed into a corner and not because he was remorseful.

He disagreed and said he had escaped from custody three times because jail “was not nice”, but that he was now willing to face the consequences of his actions.

He grew emotional when he told the court he shared the pain of the bank tellers and customers he had held at gun-point.

His co-accused Khumbulani Sibanda asked the court to be merciful when sentencing him.

He said he realised how he had scared his victims and that if he had to see them again he would apologise to them.

Moyo and Sibanda were found guilty on 15 charges including racketeering, bank robbery and escaping from custody. They pleaded guilty.

They expressed enthusiasm for getting further training in prison and for finding jobs on their release. - Sapa
