Johannesburg - An Mpumalanga pupil accused of stabbing a schoolmate to death is scheduled to appear in the Acornhoek Magistrate's Court on Monday.

Desmond Monani, 22, a Grade 10 pupil at the Reti Secondary School in Zoeknog village, near Casteel, was not asked to plead to the murder charge during his brief court appearance on Friday, a Sapa correspondent reported.

He handed himself to police on Wednesday following the fatal stabbing of Grade Nine pupil, Archie Khumalo, 17. Monani is expected to apply for bail on Monday. A Legal Aid lawyer was expected to be appointed to represent him.

Mpumalanga police spokesman Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said Khumalo was stabbed in the chest while buying a meal during lunch break in the schoolyard.

Provincial education spokesman Jasper Zwane said pupils who witnessed the killing would receive counselling.

“The department has already instituted an investigation into the circumstances which led to this unfortunate incident. (We have) also deployed officials to render counselling services to the learners, educators and the family of the deceased,” he said. - Sapa
