Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma’s fifth wife has reportedly had her R500 000 claim – for jewellery she alleged was stolen on a flight – dismissed by SA Airlink.

Thobeka Madiba-Zuma alleged she had R500 000 worth of jewellery stolen from her cosmetic bag on December 15 on an SA Airlink flight she had taken from Nelspruit to OR Tambo International Airport.

From there it is believed she was driven to Mangaung in the Free State for the ANC’s elective conference where she planned to support the president.

Beeld newspaper released a copy of Madiba-Zuma’s claim form on Tuesday.

“On 15/12/12 I last saw my Clarins cosmetic (bag) containing the stolen jewellery inside my burnt orange Cellini Microlite suitcase @ the hotel when packing & getting ready to leave for the airport (in Nelspruit),” reads the form.

“We arrived at the airport & the luggage (was) handled by my supports team (sic).”

The statement then said that her luggage was collected at OR Tambo International by her personal assistant and a lounge staff member before it was placed in the vehicle that left for Bloemfontein.

“On arrival in Bloem the luggage was handled by my protectors. When getting ready for the dinner, I noticed that the creme (sic) Clarins cosmetic bag was missing from the suitcase,” she wrote.

The reason provided for the claim was listed as “stolen jewellery”.

Her claim was reportedly dismissed by SA Airlink who said that CCTV footage showed that her luggage had not been tampered with while being handled by airline staff.

SA Airlink spokeswoman, Karin Murray would not comment on the report by Beeld, and said it was a private matter.

“Airlink has not made any statements in this regard, nor has Airlink consented to any Airlink intellectual property being published or referred to. This is a strictly private and confidential matter between Airlink and our customer,” Murray said.

According to Beeld, Madiba-Zuma said that her jewellery was not insured and she was in talks with lawyers about how to proceed.

The Presidency’s spokesman, Mac Maharaj, said questions should be asked to Madiba-Zuma directly, but said he would forward questions to her.

However, calls and e-mails to Madiba-Zuma’s foundation went unanswered this morning. National police spokesman, Phuti Setati could also not be reached.

Beeld also released the cover page of the claim form dated January 5 this year, which had a presidential letterhead and read “pls find Madam Zuma’s claim for processing as a matter of urgency” and was signed by “Ms Sithole”.
