Johannesburg - More than 10 percent of all crimes reported to police in Gauteng in the 2011/12 financial year were committed in only five areas, according to a report on Monday.
Provincial deputy police chief Major-General Phumzo Gela told residents in Muldersdrift that despite a series of serious crimes in their area, Muldersdrift was not one of the worst-hit areas in the province, reported Beeld newspaper.
According to crime statistics for 2011/12, Johannesburg Central, Hillbrow, Honeydew, Booysens and Pretoria Central were the most crime-hit areas, with 63 382 crimes reported - about 10.94 percent of all crimes in Gauteng for that financial year.
For statistical purposes, he said, Gauteng had been divided into 138 policing areas, and of these, Muldersdrift was in the 105th place, with 1992 crimes reported, or 0.34 percent of all the crime in Gauteng.
Ten murders had been committed in Muldersdrift during the relevant financial year, Gela said, but as many murders were committed in Naledi, Soweto, Soshanguve, Yeoville, Sophiatown, Vereeniging and Midrand.
Some 86 policing areas had higher murder rates, with Honeydew, bordering Muldersdrift, having reported 19 murders in 2011.
The biggest crime problem in all police areas was theft.
