Pretoria - Mourners streamed into the house of an alleged Mamelodi criminal mastermind on Monday after he was gunned down on Sunday night in a drive-by shooting outside his butchery.

Monare Ignatius Selokane, also known as “Junior 13”, was linked to a series of bank robberies and allegedly masterminded one of the most elaborate bank robberies in South African history when R26 million was stolen in 2003.

According to media reports, the police only managed to recover R1.5m.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said his killers were on the run and a murder case had been opened.

Selokane was killed around 9pm while sitting with friends.

A resident said Selokane was shot by two men who were in a bakkie.

His friends were unharmed.
