Johannesburg - Foreplay, sex, love, prostitutes and rebuttals were all part of the testimony of an Alexandra man accused, along with his son, of multiple rapes and other charges.

Booi Makhubela, 50, told the Johannesburg High Court on Thursday that he was not there during the commission of the crimes. However, he acknowledged knowing two of the complainants, but maintained that he did not rape them.

In one instance, he said the woman was a sex worker who he paid R50 for sex, while in another, he “proposed love” to the woman and had consensual sex with her, which included foreplay.

Responding to a line of questions relating to his 29-year-old son Rodgers’s testimony that he [Makhubela] had coerced Rodgers into committing the rapes and robbery, Makhubela said he would never order his son to rape or allow rape to occur in his presence.

“Accused two [Rodgers] further testified that you told him that if he doesn’t do what you tell him to do, there will be consequences,” said Makhubela’s counsel, advocate Stephens Themba. “I was not there when that incident occurred,” he said.

“Accused two testified that you wanted to have sex with the complainant, but before you could do so, a person appeared,” Themba said. “I was not there.”

“Accused two said you told him that you would shoot him if he told the police and that the police would arrest him.”

“I don’t know as I wasn’t there,” Makhubela said.

When asked to explain why he was identified at the identification parade, he said: “I’m used to being wrongly identified at the taxi rank where I operate.”

The trial continues.
