Durban - Two brothers accused of killing their neighbour, who they suspected of having an affair with their mother, were due to apply for bail on Monday.

The brothers – aged 19 and 25 – spent the weekend behind bars after they allegedly assaulted Khethaphi Gumede with sticks and knobkieries.

Gumede, 67, of the Mvini area in Umsunduzi, died at the scene.

It is alleged that the pair had been suspecting their married mother of having an affair with Gumede. Their father resides in Durban because of work commitments and visits the family only once a month.

Neighbours said the siblings and their older brother had seen Gumede entering the family house about 10pm on Wednesday.

“The three brothers waited for hours for the man to leave but he didn’t. The older brother had to leave for work at about 3am,” said the neighbour, who asked not to be named.

It is alleged that Gumede left the house just before 4am.

The brothers, who were still up, allegedly grabbed sticks and knobkieries and attacked him outside the house.

Police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane said: “The victim was allegedly attacked by the two brothers, who assaulted and killed him. He suffered head and leg injuries and died at the scene.”

Zwane said that when police officers arrived, the brothers showed them where the body was.

They were arrested and charged with murder. The suspects appeared in the Camperdown Magistrate’s Court on Friday and the case was postponed to today for their bail hearing.
