Johannesburg - A policeman accused of murdering an Ekurhuleni metro policewoman appeared in the Brakpan Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) said.

Constable Sivuyile Ndyeku, 28, would bring a formal bail application on Thursday, said Ipid spokesman Moses Dlamini. He remained in custody.

The case was postponed because the investigating officer was testifying in another matter in the high court, said Dlamini.

Ndyeku allegedly shot dead Popi Simphiwe Maseko at the scene of an accident in Brakpan on February 10.

Suspecting that Ndyeku had been driving under the influence of alcohol, Maseko and other metro police decided to take him to Pholosong Hospital for a blood test.

However, when they got there, Ndyeku, who was based at the Brakpan police station, allegedly drew his firearm and started shooting, hitting Maseko in the back of the head.

He fled, but handed himself over to the police on February 11. - Sapa
