Cape Town – The case against 48-year-old man, Mario Cesar Deus Yela accused of killing his twins was heard at the Wynberg Magistrate's Court on Monday.

Deus Yela was arrested last Thursday for the murder of his three-year-old twins at a rental holiday home in Prince Road, Hout Bay.

Deus Yela was due to appear in court four before Magistrate Goolam Bawa, but his lawyer William Booth submitted a medical certificate in support of his absence in court.

Following his arrest the accused was involved in a stabbing incident where he sustained injuries, while in police custody. It is suspected that the accused made a suicide attempt.

“The accused is under medical care at the Victoria Hospital under police guard. I visited him in hospital and he has fairly serious injuries. He was transferred to Groote Schuur Hospital for some tests over the weekend and was sent back. He has sustained serious injuries to his abdomen,” Booth told the court.

The bodies of the two children were discovered by their mother, Julia Engelhorn.

Police said the circumstances surrounding the death of the twins, a boy and a girl, are being investigated

The case was postponed to April 19.
