Durban - An alleged murderer – one of South Africa’s top 10 wanted men while on the run from police for two years – has been found hanged in his holding cell in Pietermaritzburg, two days after being arrested.

Five other suspects being held at the Loop Street Police Station cells woke up on Sunday morning to find Stanley Mkhize, 29, hanging from the window frame.

His blanket had apparently been torn into strips and tied around his neck with a piece of traditional string he wore around his waist.

Mkhize was apparently wanted in connection with a murder in Azalea location in Edendale in 2011. He was allegedly hiding in Mozambique until he was arrested in Estcourt on Friday.

A private company, Magma Security, had helped the Inanda Organised Crime Unit to find the suspect.

Mkhize was to have appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
