Mthatha - Three prisoners awaiting trial for murder have escaped from the Queenstown prison, the Eastern Cape correctional services department said on Monday.

Siyabonga Maqungo, 22, Anele Baraza, 24, and Mziyanda Muleka, 35, escaped on Saturday around 9.30am, the department said in a statement.

They are from KuNgudla village in the Tsojane administrative area. They were taken to the prison on June 10 after being arrested in connection with a murder in Tsolo.

“The department is conducting an investigation to find out how the trio escaped.”

The department opened a case of escape from lawful custody and was working with police to re-arrest them.
