Kagiso, East Rand - A man was jailed for 245 years on Wednesday for two murders and armed robbery, police spokesman Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya said.

The High Court in Johannesburg earlier convicted Tshidiso “Slender” Gaseboe, 36, of shooting dead an officer as he was leaving a shop in Kagiso, Ekurhuleni, in August 2011.

He stole the slain policeman's firearm before running away.

In December the same year, Gaseboe used the stolen firearm to kill a Pakistani shop owner in Roodepoort.

“Police investigations revealed that the accused had committed more than eight armed business robberies since 2009 in Kagiso and Roodepoort.”

He was arrested in June 2011.

Sibiya said Gaseboe had been granted parole in April 2009.

He had been arrested in 1997 for robbery and escaping from lawful custody.

On Tuesday, the court found Gaseboe guilty on eight charges of business robbery with aggravating circumstances and sentenced him to 20 years in jail for each charge.

“The total sentencing of the accused was 245 years, and two life sentences in jail,” said Sibiya. - Sapa
