Johannesburg - Nicolette du Randt has died after being shot by her ex-husband, the musician Zirk Bergh, last week, the office of North West premier Thandi Modise said on Wednesday.

Du Randt died at the Garden City Clinic in Johannesburg on Monday, Modise's office said in a statement.

Bergh also shot Du Randt's new husband Dr Charl du Randt and his 23-year-old social worker Deon Kondos before turning the gun on himself.

Charl du Randt, Bergh and Kondos died on Saturday.

Captain Pelonomi Makau said Bergh had an appointment to meet his eight-year-old daughter on Saturday.

When his ex-wife arrived with their daughter, Bergh pulled out a gun and told the child to run to the offices of the Suid-Afrikaanse Vrouefederasie, a women's welfare organisation, where the meeting was to have taken place.

At the time, Charl du Randt was waiting in his car with his four-year-old daughter and an infant.

“A female friend of the social worker was in the house when she heard gunshots fired,” Makau said.

The friend ran out of the house and saw Bergh and Kondos lying dead next to the road. Bergh left a suicide note in which he claimed his ex-wife had denied him access to their daughter.

Modise sent her condolences, and said Du Rant's death evoked sadness and bitterness, as gender-based violence had robbed innocent children of the love and care of their parents.

She expressed concern that the children who witnessed the attack would be psychologically scarred, even after receiving counselling.

Modise called on the country's men to act against gender-based violence.

“Real men do not to hurt women, but protect them against violence,” she said. - Sapa
