Mmabatho - Seven awaiting-trial prisoners escaped from the Mmabatho police station in the early hours of Tuesday, North West police said.

“The suspects allegedly escaped by cutting the mesh wire of the cell and of the ceiling,” Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said.

He said the circumstances which led to their escape would be investigated.

“If it can be found that there was negligence by the members, necessary steps will be taken,” Ngubane said.

The escapees include Solomon Moleko, known as Hammer Man, who is charged with rape and murder.

“The others are Patrick Bogodile, charged with theft of motor vehicle, Gaothaelwe Lesole, facing a charge of house robbery, Boitumelo Moiloa, charged with murder, Goitseone Mogodunyan, charged with possession of suspected stolen property, Charles Pheta, facing a charge of car hijacking and robbery, and Mogomotsi Sebolane, who is also facing a charge of car hijacking and robbery,” Ngubane said.

He urged community members to assist police in arresting the escapees.

“The community is warned not to arrest the suspects in case they see them, but to report them to the nearest police station,” Ngubane said.
