Rustenburg – An awaiting-trial prisoner who made a dramatic escape from a police van was rearrested on Tuesday, North West police said.

Police spokesperson Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said Alfonzo Mpofu, 25, was arrested in Majakaneng, south of Brits, after members of the community saw him there.

“Members of the community who spotted Mpofu at Majakaneng village near Mooinooi informed the police. The police then responded swiftly and followed the lead. Mpofu was found in his rental place and arrested,” said Mokgwabone.

The other three suspects, Chris Sithole, 24, and Gibson Msimango, 25, both from Zimbabwe and Ontse Lebese, 27 from Ga-Rankuwa, were still at large.

The suspects escaped from a police vehicle while they were being transported from Mogwase Correctional Service to Brits Magistrate’s Court on February 5.

Mpofu was expected to appear in Brits Magistrate’s Court soon and is facing his initial charges of murder, four counts of rape, robbery, as well as escaping from lawful custody.

In another incident, three awaiting trial prisoners escaped from the court’s cells at Lehurutshe Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Thabo Motsumi, 24, Andile Lindi, 21, and Kagiso Tshukutswane, 22, appeared in court for business robbery and possession of unlicensed firearm.

The manner in which they escaped was being investigated.
