Potchefstroom – North West police have lauded the Wolmaransstad family violence, child protection, and sexual offence unit (FCS) for securing a lengthy jail sentence for convicted rapist Fatankie Daniel Motsielwa, 25.

Motsielwa was sentenced in the Bloemhof Regional Court this week to 10 years in jail for rape.

He was already serving a five-year sentence for robbery and assault, in the Christiana prison, North West police spokesman Major Pelonomi Makau said.

At about 1.20am on September 9, 2012, a woman walking home from a local tavern in Boitumelong township near Bloemhof was grabbed from behind by Motsielwa. He held a knife to her throat and threatened to kill her.

He forced her to accompany him to a nearby yard where a building was under construction and raped her.

“Afterwards, he informed her that they were going to another place where his friends were going to have sexual intercourse with her. He then took her to a local school where he raped her again in one of the unlocked classrooms and ordered her to go home,” Makau said.

The victim immediately reported the incident to her employer and her sister in Boitumelong, and they accompanied her to the police station to report the incident.

Bloemhof police subsequently received information from a community member that the woman had been raped in the early hours by Motsielwa.

“The caller gave a physical description as well as the clothes the accused was wearing which corresponded with what the victim stated in her statement. More information was given to the police about the whereabouts of the suspect.”

Motsielwa was traced and arrested at his girlfriend’s home, and was positively identified by the victim, Makau said.
