Rustengurg - A North West government employee who opened fire on his colleagues before turning the gun on himself had his salary stopped, the province's public safety department said on Wednesday.

The department discovered that Serame Moirapula, the chief housing inspector, had not been reporting for duty since the beginning of this year, spokesman Ben Bole said.

“In view of the foregoing, the department had no option but to freeze his salary for May 2014 informed by... the Public Service Act,” Bole said in a statement.

He opened fire on his colleagues on Thursday, killing newly-appointed administration officer Aubrey Kgaladi, and wounding three others. He then killed himself.

“We had three colleagues who got seriously injured and two got admitted to hospital and were discharged on Saturday,” said Bole.

The wounded were cleaner Veronica Mosala, assistant director in the economic development department's compliance and enforcement unit Sehularo Matsobane, and deputy director in housing development Leshoe Phenyo.

Phenyo was treated for head injuries by a private doctor.

Police were still investigating the shooting. - Sapa
