A live-in nanny kidnapped her employer's six-month-old baby in Hestia Park, Pretoria on Monday, February 06, 2012, Gauteng police said.
When the mother woke up on Monday morning, she realised the nanny and the baby were gone, said Lt-Col Tshisikhawe Ndou.
The 21-year-old, a Zimbabwean, shared a room with the mother and her baby.
Ndou said a security guard told the mother the nanny left with the baby around 5am. She told the guard she was taking the baby to the doctor.
The guards alerted the mother who called the police, said Ndou. The nanny had also taken two cellphones, a wallet, a bank card and money from the house.
Ndou said the nanny had sent an sms to the mother earlier on Monday asking for a ransom in exchange for the baby's safe return.
Ndou could not confirm a news report that the nanny demanded R45 000 for the baby. - Sapa
