Pretoria - The South African Police Service (SAPS) and the South African Banking Risk Information Centre (SABRIC) have renewed efforts to combat bank-related and cash-in-transit crime, including identifying and going after the top criminals.

The South African government news agency SA News reported on Friday that the two agencies had resolved to continue working together following a two-day high-level strategic workshop in Pretoria this week.

Police National Commissioner General Riah Phiyega said it was crucial for crime-fighting efforts for the police to work with partners. “We believe that part of our success lies in community policing because it enhances our ability to deliver,” said Phiyega.

SAPS also said it would increase its capacity to investigate cyber-related commercial crime as well as enhancing intelligence capabilities between police and the banking industry.

“As a matter of urgency, we want to ensure that the top-20 bank and cash-in-transit criminals in every province and at Head Office are arrested,” SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant General Solomon Makgale added.

Makgale also reported that so-called related “cold cases” will be reopened to determine whether they had been thoroughly investigated and that the detectives had explored all investigative avenues.
