Durban - Fields Hill death crash truck driver Sanele May is likely to be joined in the dock by a representative of the company he worked for when he faces 24 charges of culpable homicide.
May, who was due to appear in the Durban High Court on Tuesday, was erroneously taken to the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court where the matter had previously been heard.
Durban High Court Judge Shyam Gyanda proceeded with the matter in absentia on tuesday as May’s advocate Louis Barnard and attorney Linda Mdletshe were present. Several of May’s supporters who have been present at his court appearances sat in the public gallery.
May is facing the charges after he lost control of his truck in September, crashing into several vehicles in Pinetown.
State advocate, Alistair Walters, told the court the state planned to add an additional accused to the case. However, he did not specify who.
Barnard said he had made arrangements to consult with May later on Tuesday.
Gyanda provisionally postponed the matter to August and ordered that May remain in police custody.
Outside court, asked to comment on the likelihood that the company would be added as an accused, supporters said they just wanted to see justice done.
“We are also very cogniscent of the families who have lost someone and it is very important to Sane (Sanele) that the families are looked after,” supporter Peach Piche’ said.
“We want justice. This was always about access to justice. We just want to make sure that blame is apportioned at the right door,” Piche’ said.
Piche said May had 15 000 supporters globally on the Sanele May Support Group on Facebook.
May’s uncle and brother were also in court.
