KwaZulu-Natal - Nine people have been arrested in Melmoth and charged for poaching, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Tuesday.

The group, including two teenagers, were allegedly found in possession of four dead bucks, an axe, two shotguns, a pistol and ammunition, Captain Thulani Zwane said.

Patrolling Melmoth police officers came across their car on Friday and tried to stop them.

The car did not stop and police gave chase until it stopped.

Zwane said the group, aged between 16 and 56, appeared in the Melmoth Magistrates' Court on Friday. They face charges of poaching and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The case was postponed to March 6.

Seven adults were remanded in custody and the two juveniles were released into the custody of their parents. - Sapa
