Johannesburg - Documents for a possible civil claim relating to upgrades at President Jacob Zuma's private Nkandla homestead in KwaZulu-Natal have been handed over to lawyers, the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) said on Thursday.
“… The unit can reveal that disciplinary files have been handed over to the Department of Public Works. Documents in support of possible civil claims have been made available to our counsel,” SIU spokesman Boy Ndala said in an e-mail to Sapa.
“The SIU is still hopeful that its report to the president will be finalised in June.”
Ndala stressed that the SIU's investigation into the Nkandla saga was confidential.
“We do not make public our findings, whether these are of a final or interim nature,” he said, reacting to a report in The Times that 10 department employees were cited in the SIU's preliminary findings report.
According to the report, the department's employees and contractors were to blame as they inflated prices, The Times reported.
Details of the SIU investigation were contained in correspondence from public works director-general Mziwonke Dlabantu to Public Protector Thuli Madonsela.
Madonsela, in her own report, found Zuma and his family unduly benefited from R246 million security upgrades to his private Nkandla homestead. These included a swimming pool, a cattle kraal and an amphitheatre. She recommended, among other things, that he pay back a portion of the money.
Zuma has said previously he would await the outcome of SIU probe before responding to the matter.
In mid-May, government said a security cluster of ministers would approach a high court for a judicial review of Madonsela's report.
