Ottoshoop - A man accused of killing two children and seriously hurting his ex-girlfriend appeared in the Zeerust Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, North West police said.

The matter was postponed to April 19 and Michael Mqathula, 35, remained in custody, Colonel Emelda Setlhako said.

He was denied bail in his last court appearance. He was charged with arson, two counts of murder, and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

A two-year-old girl and a three-year-old boy died when he set fire to their shack in Maruping village, Ottoshoop, in December. Mqathula was the father of one of the children. The ex-girlfriend was the other child's aunt, police said at the time.
