Johannesburg -Advocate Jeremy Gauntlett did not make the cut for the Constitutional Court vacancy, SABC news reported on Friday.

The public broadcaster said Gauntlet failed to secure a seat in the ConCourt despite having being nominated by legal academics and DA leader, Helen Zille. The Judicial Services Commission (JSC) has been holding interviews with a shortlist of five candidates created by the retirement of Justice Zak Yacoob, said the SABC.

The five candidates interviewed by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) on Friday were Gauntlett, Mbuyiseli Madlanga, Supreme Court of Appeal Judge Ronnie Bosielo and Gauteng High Court judges Selby Baqwa and Brian Spilg.

Gauntlett made headlines in 2012 when he was ignored as a potential candidate for a judicial appointment in Cape Town. After the public outcry, the JSC eventually acknowledged that Gauntlett had not been appointed because he “was short-tempered” and “did not have the humble qualities expected of a member of the judiciary”. An even bigger outcry followed, after which more than 60 of the country's leading academics and institutions declared their support for Gauntlett. - Sapa
