Cape Town - The African National Congress (ANC) has used their official Twitter account to dispel speculation that Thoko Didiza, the party’s nominee for Tshwane mayor, escaped an assassination attempt.

Most parts of the city had been rendered inaccessible due to road closures, looting of shops and the torching of vehicles during protests sparked by the announcement of Didiza’s nomination.

“There is no truth to the rumours spread across social media platforms alleging that Comrade #ThokoDidiza's car has been shot at,” the tweet read.

It was reported that the former cabinet member’s vehicle was peppered with bullets in the early hours of Wednesday at a shopping mall close to her Pretoria residence.

According to Mzansi Live, sources close to the ex-minister revealed that she wasn’t in the car.

“They nearly killed her driver with bullets, for what?? Is a nomination worthy to take someone’s life?” the source said.

“This political unrest is troubling us as a family, we are a peace loving family, Thoko is a mother of five, caring and loving. The people have rejected her and she is doing everything she can to get the nomination cancelled.”
