Rustenburg - A policeman was shot dead in Hartbeesfontein near Klerksdorp on Thursday, North West police said.

Police spokesperson Colonel Emelda Setlhako said the 32-year-old constable was gunned down while he was responding to a business burglary alarm at a local bank in Hartbeesfontein.

“Preliminary investigation indicates that the deceased member and his colleague were responding to a call out from the local security company, and upon arrival on the scene the members were shot at by unknown assailants resulting in the fatal shooting of one member who was the crew in the response vehicle,” she said.

“The other member returned fire resulting in the assailants fleeing the scene in a vehicle of the security company which they earlier robbed from the security guard who arrived on the scene before the police.”

North West provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane has condemned the incident while the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) are investigating the case.
