Durban - North West police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Zukiswa Mbombo, who came under scrutiny during the investigation and consequent commission into the Marikana shootings – will collect her pension from the end of the month.

The commissioner’s spokesman confirmed her retirement on Tuesday, adding that the development would be formally announced on Friday at a handing over of the sword ceremony, where her successor’s name would be made public.

“People are linking this announcement with Marikana, which is unfortunate. This timing is sheer coincidence because she (Mbombo) will turn 60 on May 22. That is retirement age,” said Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone.

He was referring to the release of the full report of what transpired at Marikana during a miners’ strike in 2012 that turned violent.

Last week, President Jacob Zuma told MPs he was still reading the Farlam Commission of Inquiry’s report on the incident and was not prepared to set a date for its release. The presidency had received the report on March 31.

During the commission, Mbombo admitted that the police operation had been a failure.
