Not just Sadtu in jobs scam: congress

Cape Town - Numerous unions could be involved in alleged job promotion racketeering, the National Congress of School Governing Bodies said on Wednesday.

“The congress does not agree with the opinion that only SA Democratic Teachers' Union (Sadtu) members are involved in the scam,” secretary general Monokoane Hlobo said.

“The above opinion intends to tarnish the image of Sadtu as a union. The question is: what about other unions?”

Reports emerged recently that Sadtu members were selling principal and deputy principal positions at schools for upwards of R30 000 each.

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga previously said the allegations were serious and she would not hesitate to institute criminal charges against those responsible.

She met President Jacob Zuma, who approved the setting up of a judicial commission of inquiry into the allegations.

Hlobo welcomed the inquiry and said corruption should be reported and dealt with accordingly.

He appealed to the basic education department to train governing bodies on shortlisting and interviewing processes, instead of centralising them.
