Durban - A nursing sister is being held in connection with her husband’s 2011 murder.
The 44-year-old woman was arrested on Friday by detectives from the Provincial Specific Crimes Investigations unit and KwaMakhutha SAPS.
Police believe the woman may have been given advice on how to carry out the crime by a friend who had her husband murdered.
KZN police spokesman, Colonel Vincent Mdunge, said the arrest had been made after investigations conducted by Warrant Officer Vincent Nyuswa of KwaMakhutha.
Mdunge said the man whad been killed in December 2011 by three men who entered his Adams Mission home and robbed him of R70 000 in stokvel money.
“The suspects took the man and his Toyota Yaris to Obivane River in the Umbumbulu area where they shot him dead. Detectives recovered a cellphone and a wristwatch which were taken during the robbery,” he said.
Mdunge said the vehicle had been found abandoned in the Ngonyameni area near uMlazi.
“The three hitmen were arrested in February last year.
“All three men are currently serving life sentences,” he said.
Mdunge said police were now on the hunt for the nurse’s friend who they believe may have helped her set up the murder. “The nurse had seen her friend with a new expensive vehicle.
Mdunge alleged: “When she (the nurse) had asked the friend how she had come to afford this car, she was told of how the friend had killed her husband and had used the life insurance money to afford her new expensive life style.”
He
said a 28-year-old woman, who claimed that one of the hitmen was her brother, had allegedly approached a detective from KwaMakhutha SAPS and asked him to steal the murder docket.
He said: “She offered to give the detective R30 000. The woman was arrested and released on bail.”
He said further police investigations revealed that the nurse had allegedly hired three hitmen to do the job for her.
Mdunge said the woman had allegedly told the men to make the murder look like a house robbery and to take the stokvel money.
The nurse was expected to appear in court soon.
