Johannesburg - An off-duty policeman narrowly escaped death when armed robbers in Lebowakgomo shot at him and he suffered only a superficial wound, Limpopo police said on Saturday.

Warrant Officer Phetole Moses Ramolefo had knocked off and was still in his uniform when four armed men hijacked a bakkie at a car wash, said spokeswoman Colonel Ronel Otto.

“He took his vehicle to a car wash at around 7pm last night [Friday] and while there, four unknown suspects wearing balaclavas [and] in two vehicles hijacked the brand new Toyota bakkie of an employee of a nearby shop.”

“The off-duty member went to assist but in the process was shot in the head.”

But the bullet only grazed his forehead, she said.

The 48-year-old officer was taken to hospital for treatment. The men took his service firearm and fled the scene.

“No arrests have been made yet; the hunt for the suspects, as well as the hijacked vehicle, continues,” Otto said.
