The SA Policing Union (Sapu) on Wednesday welcomed a new move to train all police officers in basic detective work.

An off-duty police officer has been shot dead in Rondebult, Alberton, Gauteng police said on Monday.

Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini said Eric Mthanti, 30, was shot on Sunday night when he responded to a call for help from his brother, who was involved in a fight with two men.

“As he was about to alight from his vehicle, several shots were fired at him (by the men) and (he) was fatally wounded.”
