Cape Town - A police officer was shot dead during an apparent robbery at the Klapmuts police station outside Stellenbosch, Western Cape police said on Thursday.

The warrant officer, 44, was killed while on duty on Wednesday night at around 10.30pm, said Lt-Col Andrè Traut.

"Steven Brits was shot by unknown suspects, and a firearm was stolen," said Traut.

No further details were provided. He said a media statement would be issued shortly. - Sapa
