Rustenburg - A 30-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday morning after a business robbery in East End, Rustenburg, North West police said.

Five men, two of them armed, entered a food outlet on Kruger Street, held the owner at gunpoint and forced him to open the safe.

They took an undisclosed amount of money, Captain Pelonomi Makau said.

“On their way out, the owner managed to grab his firearm and shot one of the suspects, who escaped with (a wound).”

Makau said that as the robbers were fleeing, a customer approaching the shop noticed that something was amiss, and chased the robbers.

They dropped the bag of cash. The customer caught one of the robbers. The other four were still being sought.

A blood-stained Toyota Camry the robbers were thought to have used was found abandoned nearby. It was seized by police.

Makau said the blood would be sent for DNA tests.

“We are hoping to make more arrests soon, as our investigations are continuing,” he said.

The arrested man would appear soon in the Rustenburg Magistrate's Court. - Sapa
