Pietermaritzburg - Two men were arrested in Pietermaritzburg on Monday for possession of 43 stolen cases of Oros juice, said KwaZulu-Natal police.
Captain Thulani Zwane said police came under fire when they arrived at the scene of a robbery early on Monday morning. When they returned fire, the robbers drove off in a white Volkswagen Polo.
Later in Cleland, police saw a second vehicle used in the robbery.
“A high speed chase between the police and the suspects ensued...,” said Zwane. Bottles of juice fell out of the bakkie during the chase in Sobantu,” he said.
“One of the suspects, who (was) seated in the back of the bakkie, opened the canopy door and fired multiple shots at the (police). They returned fire and a short while later the suspect jumped out of the moving bakkie and fled into nearby bushes,” he said.
The bakkie stopped in Plessislaer, where the other occupants jumped out and ran away.
A police dog caught one of them. “The driver of the vehicle was also arrested. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his body,” said Zwane.
Both men were under police guard in hospital.
Zwane said bolt-cutters and crowbars were found in the bakkie, which was thought to be a rental vehicle, with the cases of juice.
He said police believed the robbers were part of a larger syndicate that stole goods from trucks in Pietermaritzburg and Durban.
The two men arrested would appear soon in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's Court.
