An ex-girlfriend has added to the woes of Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius, on trial for murdering model Reeva Steenkamp, as a possible State witness to further charges of his reckless use of firearms.
According to media reports, Samantha Taylor has given the police information about his history with guns.
Sapa reports that the National Prosecuting Authority has told Pistorius’s lawyers it plans to charge him with two counts of recklessly discharging a gun in a public place.
The Paralympian’s lawyers have refused to comment on the new charges, which are believed to be part of the State’s strategy to paint Pistorius as trigger-happy.
The charges relate to two incidents. The first occurred when Pistorius allegedly fired his gun out the sunroof of a friend’s car on the way back from a weekend holiday.
The second relates to Pistorius allegedly accidentally firing his friend’s gun in a Johannesburg restaurant.
The NPA has declined to comment on the additional charges, or the Pistorius indictment at this stage.
Pistorius, who due back in court on Monday,, is accused of the premeditated murder of the model, and the illegal possession of ammunition.
Taylor, a student who dated Pistorius before his relationship with Steenkamp, apparently told police about an incident in which Pistorius allegedly stood up while travelling on a highway and fired shots through the car’s sunroof.
In earlier interviews, after her break-up with Pistorius, Taylor publicly warned Steenkamp that the athlete was “not what people think he is”.
After Steenkamp’s death, Taylor’s mother Trish Taylor went on to Facebook to say she was grateful “Sammy is safe and sound, and out of the clutches of that man”.
Pistorius, who has denied the premeditated murder charge, has admitted that he shot Steenkamp through a closed door in his Pretoria home, but said he mistook her for a burglar.
The trial is not expected to start until next year, given the backlog in the country’s regional high courts. -
