Pretoria - The holding cells at the Brooklyn police station in Pretoria where murder accused paralympian Oscar Pistorius is being held have no beds, Beeld reported on Thursday.

Pistorius is therefore sleeping on the floor, presumably on bedding supplied by his family, and sometimes has to share his cell with other detainees.

“I can't say with any certainty how many people he has to share a cell with, as there is probably a constant flow of people coming and going as they get arrested and released, or transferred to prisons,” Brigadier Andre Wiese, the station commander, told the newspaper.

Wiese said he could also not supply information on what kind of meals Pistorius would be eating, as the menu depended on what kind of ingredients were available.

“All that I can say is that he is being treated with the same degree of human dignity as any other prisoner, as stipulated in the Constitution.”

He also confirmed that each communal holding cell had only one single shower and toilet. - Sapa
