Pretoria - It is unsure whether Oscar Pistorius on Saturday attempted to commit suicide or whether the injuries he suffered to his wrists were due to an accident when he fell off his bed, and the family chose to remain mum.

Spokesperson Anneliese Burgess referred all enquiries to the Department of Correctional Services.

“They are the only people who can at this stage comment,” Burgess said.

The department was only willing to confirm that “Oscar’s minor injuries” to his wrists were attended to at the Kgosi Mampuru II Prison in Pretoria where is is serving his six-year jail term, and that he was then send to the Kalafong Hospital, west of Pretoria, for further treatment.

According to the department he was later taken back to prison. They said while Oscar denied it was a suicide attempt, they cannot further discuss an offender’s personal condition in the public domain.

The State gave notice about two weeks ago that it was going to ask for leave to appeal against Oscar’s “ lenient” sentence for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. No date has yet been set for Judge Thokozile Masipa to hear the application.

Prosecutor Gerrie Nel wants the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein to increase Oscar’s sentence.

This will be the second time the prosecution heads to the SCA. It won the first round, when five SCA judges overturned his conviction on culpable homicide and replaced it with a verdict of murder.
