Cape Town - Four people were arrested hours after an ostrich was killed and 13 others plucked of their feathers on a farm outside Dysselsdorp near Oudtshoorn.

Police also recovered bags containing ostrich feathers and 25 eggs.

“Vigilant police members stopped a bakkie with four occupants on the road between Oudtshoorn and George on Monday morning about 3am. The vehicle was travelling towards Oudtshoorn,” said police spokeswoman Bernadine Steyn.

“The bakkie was searched and six bags containing ostrich feathers and one bag with 25 ostrich eggs were confiscated. The suspects were arrested for possession of possible stolen goods.”

A case of malicious damage to property is also being investigated.

Monday’s incident comes a week after eight ostriches died and 30 were plucked at a farm outside Oudtshoorn.

Chief executive of the South African Ostrich Chamber in Oudtshoorn Piet Kleyn said: “It is becoming a great concern that almost every week there is an attack on ostriches.”
