Ottoshoop - A man accused of killing two children and seriously injuring his ex-girlfriend appeared in the Zeerust Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, North West police said.

The case against Michael Mqathula, 35, was postponed until February 12 as he was denied bail, Colonel Emelda Setlhako said.

Mqathula was charged with arson, two counts of murder and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm after he was arrested in Maruping village, Ottoshoop, in December.

Two children, a two-year-old girl and a three-year-old boy, died when he allegedly set fire to their shack, Captain Pelonomi Makau said at the time.

Mqathula was the father of one of the children. The ex-girlfriend was the other child's aunt.

“It is alleged that after burning the shack the suspect stabbed his ex-girlfriend with a knife several times... and she was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries.”

The motive for the attack was still unknown and investigations were continuing.
